Guide for New Members & Guests to
Annual membership fees for 2018 range from £25 for a Cadet (under 18) to £115 for a Family.
Our Membership Secretary – Rosie Lord - will be pleased to give you details of club membership and an introduction to our activities - Social and Sailing.
A good way of getting to know people and learning about club routine is to join one of the "Duty Teams" in the Galley, Race Box, or Safety Boat as Downs is very much a ‘Members’ Club and nearly all activities rely on the goodwill of some members giving up their time for the benefit of others. We would like all members to carry out a minimum of six duties in one of the Duty Teams over the whole sailing season and it is an excellent way of getting to know people and to learn about club routine. Simon Green co-ordinates the Duty Rota: downsrota@gmail.com and will ensure you are supported to ease you in.
If you need help with Club sailing, racing and boat plots please contact the Sailing Secretary SIMON GREEN (tel 01304 768682).
If you are interested in getting afloat or trying / starting sailing, always arrive with a full change of clothing, waterproof anorak and a pair of old soft soled shoes (and a towel if you want a hot shower afterwards). PHIL HALLDRON, the Club Training Secretary, will be happy to tell you about our training programme - phone him on 01304 372562.
Personal buoyancy should always be worn when you go afloat.
There are Club buoyancy aids that can be borrowed in your early days.
There are several Club owned boats that can be hired at a nominal fee per session. Full details of how to book, rig, stow away and pay for your use of the Club Boats are to be found in the Club Entrance Hall.
Sailing outside of the normal club programme time.
When members choose to sail at times other than the normal Club programmed time, they will need to be totally responsible for their own safety and their use of the club premises. If you choose to sail outside the normal club programme:
* Have regard for the Bridge Club activity most afternoons.
* Lock the premises before leaving the beach.
* Remember to switch off the electricity in the storeroom after using the winch.
* Reactivate the alarm before leaving the Club premises.
Reminder about the tides at Downs SC - there is a tidal flow towards Ramsgate (i.e. North) which starts 2 hours before high water, followed by a flow towards Dover starting 4 hours after high water.
