RYA Powerboat 2 Course


The course will follow the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Syllabus helping to develop skills and understanding with sessions ashore but principally time afloat. Topics include safety boat preparation, launch and recovery, boat handling, anchoring, towing, simple passage planning and emergency procedures. The course is recommended for all members doing DSC Safety boat duties, and will be coupled to a mentoring scheme to consolidate and practice the skills further as part of the DSC Duty roster.
A second Powerboat 2 Course and/or a RYA Safety boat course will be arranged later in the season if there is enough interest and demand.

Adults Sailing Course


This introductory programme will follow the RYA Start Sailing level 1 and Basic Skills level 2 syllabi. A variety of boats will be used but mainly the doubled Laser 2000 dinghy. Friday evening’s will be at Downs Sailing Club and will include sailing theory and preparation for the following day. The first three Saturday sessions will take place on the sheltered waters of Redoubt Lake, Hythe .The final Saturday will introduce everybody to the equipment and sailing on the sea at Downs SC.


Do You Know How It Works – Club Facilities?

A series of short discussions and demonstrations that will help refresh people’s understanding of operational scenarios of DSC life, including immediate life saving and use of Club De-Fib equipment, safe operation of winches, where Club boat equipment is stored, and any other questions there might be on the evening.


Children's Sailing Course


Summary: This course will give children aged 7 and over basic boating skills and introduce them to sailing, enabling them to have fun afloat. Whilst the course will follow the RYA Start Sailing Level 1 syllabus, the training will be delivered informally and will include a number of fun activities.
Friday evenings 18:30 (at Downs Sailing Club) will include sailing theory and preparation for the following day.
The first 3 Saturday sessions (09:30) will take place on the sheltered waters of Redoubt lake, Hythe and the children will be divided into 2 or 3 groups depending on age and ability. They will sail Optimist, Topper and Feva dinghies which are specifically designed for young people.
The final 2 Saturday (mornings 09:30) will introduce the children to sailing on the sea at Downs SC.
Advanced Booking for this programme is essential


Club Coach Sunday's

During the season, the Club Coach will be available on certain Sunday mornings to encourage, support and advise less experienced members to get afloat and have the opportunity to practice their boat handling skills, and when confident enough, to join in the racing activities


Friday Sailing
Dates: May to August 1800  - 2130 hrs


Summary: Friday evening in the summer months are for everyone. The club coach and volunteers are here to support you to enjoy Downs SC and develop your skills at the club on and off the water. Whilst we have a core aim in supporting younger sailors, as resources allow, we also aim to support adults.
To make it more effective please get involved in any way you can ........on the water ....... on the beach ...... in the club. Don't be shy to ask. The club exists for its members and is run by the members.
