Learn to Sail
 

Downs Sailing Club founded in 1949, became an approved RYA training centre in 2007, and can therefore run RYA courses and issue RYA qualifications in its own right.

At Downs we offer a restricted number of specialist courses for members only, which are run by qualified instructors on a voluntary basis. We are not a commercial training establishment and have no intention of being so. Dover Water Sports does however, run a wide range of courses and Downs SC members will continue to receive a discount off these.

The Downs Sailing Club Coach

For the first time last year with the help of the RYA we appointed a ‘Club Coach’ to assist with club sailing throughout this summer. This specialist help was available to all, to increase sailing confidence and the number of people regularly sailing at DSC. The Club Coach  co-ordinated the Friday Club and generally helped new members as well as  from time to time giving 1:1 sailing  instruction when requested.  Although the club Coach we had last year is no longer available we are hoping to appoint another to continue this activity.

Dover Water Sports

Dover WS provides sailing training on a commercial basis in the more sheltered waters of Dover harbour. They offer a range of courses, with many also leading to RYA qualifications. Dover Water Sports is particularly suited to teaching people new to sailing and their courses include:

·        RYA Stage I Start Sailing: A 2 day course on which the complete novice will learn basic boat handling skills. Usually held over a weekend.

·        There are a further 3 Stages in the RYA Start Sailing structure all arranged in convenient 2 day units. These stages will enable people to gain a substantial amount of knowledge and expertise. This will provide a valuable grounding to those who wish to race, day sail or cruise offshore.

Downs SC members receive 10% discount.
