Course: RYA Powerboat Level II Course * ⊕
Dates: 19-21st March - starting Fri 1900, Sat 0900 & Sun 1300 Summary: The course will involve theory and practical “on the water” sessions which can lead to the RYA level II Powerboat Certificate. The programme is especially suitable for DSC Safety duty crews to help further develop their powerboat driving skills and will include : Engine care, Launch & recovery, boat handling, anchoring, towing, and simple journey planning. This is an essential qualification for anyone wanting to be a RYA Sailing Instructor.
Course: RYA Safety Boat * ⊕
Dates: 1-3rd October - starting Fri 1900, Sat 0900 & Sun 1300 Summary: This Course will follow the RYA Safety Boat Syllabus helping competent powerboat drivers develop their rescue and fleet safety skills in local waters while supporting a variety of small boats.
Course: DSC Safety Boat Refresher Course *
Dates: 8th April - 1930-2100hrs Summary: This evening seminar will help refresh people’s understanding of the safety-boat start-up and close-down procedures, & radio operation, and will discuss typical safety-duty operational scenarios
Course: Junior RIB Driving * ⊕
Dates: 23rd May & 13th June - 1400-1700hrs Summary: The programme will introduce young people to RIB driving and will select the DSC driver for the RYA SE Junior RIB Driving competitions, 8-12 yrs & 12-16 yrs
Course: DSC Race Officer Refresher Course *
Dates: 22nd April - 19.30 – 21.00 hrs Summary: RYA Race Officer training tailored to Downs SC needs, will include safety boat crew theory and ‘our’ race-box technology - Open to all.
Course: ‘Lets Get Racin’ *
Dates: 16th, 23rd, 30th May, 6th, 13th June 0900 – 1130hrs Summary: Personal (hopefully one-to-one) training with expert “Buddys” to encourage non-racing sailors to join the club racing programme. The 5 sessions will follow the RYA Start Racing syllabus & explain the procedures / format of a club race and allow practice of starting, mark rounding and basic rules. The training will conclude with practice races. Participants should be capable of sailing a triangular course in wind strengths up to Force 4. This course is free, although pre-booking would be helpful for the organisers – please contact Ysanne Spicer.
Course: Children’s Sailing * ⊕
Dates: 21st, 22nd May, 4th, 5th, June, & 9th, 10th, July - Fridays 1800-2000hrs & Saturdays 0930-1630hrs Summary: The course will give children basic boating skills and introduce them to sailing, enabling them to have fun afloat & will work towards the RYA Start Sailing Level 1 Award. Open to children at least 7 years old, the course is conducted in Optimist and Topper dinghies on the sheltered waters of Redoubt and at Downs. Please note that each Saturday session is preceded with a brief Introduction /Practical programme on the Friday evening.
Course: RYA OnBoard Programme ⊕
Dates: 16th & 23rd, July - 1730 -2100hrs Summary: This is a ‘Come & Try’ sailing at Downs SC for young people from local schools being run in conjunction with Stuart Bishop, the SE OnBoard Sailing Development officer. Open to all. Interested people should book a place with Stuart Bishop (01304 212880) or Ysanne Spicer.
The Friday Club* Dates: May to August Summary: This is an evening sailing opportunity co-ordinated by the ‘Club Professional’ that is open to everybody - adults & cadets; novices to the most experienced. Come along for a casual sail, ask for help with rigging & launching techniques, learn a new skill, practice your boat handling or chat over a coffee or beer. There will be a nominal charge for those joining the more formal ‘Club Professional’ group, but no charge for other folk joining the evening.
